One of Australia’s top female surfers on the world tour, Amee Donohoe, has caught the finless surfing bug and started shaping and riding alaias. Amee has had a bit of a break from the world tour in recent months after an injury. Amee has been making her own boards from our 8ft paulownia blanks with friends and we have also shaped her up a 5’11” performance model alaia for her to surf when she gets back in the water.  We have just got some nice new bamboo fins in from Rainbow Fin co. in the USA. These fins are all hand crafted by their family run operation in Santa Cruz, California and all of the templates are well tested and often co-designed by big name shapers. We have keel, quad and thruster fins ready to go into FCS or Futures fin boxes and we also have glass-on bamboo Twin and Tri fin sets for those making their own boards. These fins are all super light weight with excellent strength and flex properties. Check them out in the FIN section of the store.

You might have seen some alaia shaping on  Better Homes and Gardens on TV last week. We have been working with the shows producers over the last few months and supplying our wooden alaia blanks and advice for them to put together the story. Fluid Earth hope to be using 100% plant based materials as their technology is developed further. The fins are also 100% recyclable and the manufacturer accepts damaged fins which are reprocessed, saving the additional energy and emissions required to produce virgin material.
